 Vettel heads Red Bull one-two
Stuart Sykes
Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber will start the from the front row in Sunday’s Qantas Australian Grand Prix after a record-breaking qualifying session at Albert Park on Saturday afternoon.

Webber looked set to claim his first home pole position and the second of his career when he clocked 1:24.035 early in Q3, the final 10-minute session of the hour-long qualifying period.

Vettel had already eclipsed the previous qualifying record in the second segment with a time of 1:24.276, well under the 1:24.408 set by Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari back in 2004.

Instants after Webber’s Q3 effort the 22-year-old German became the first driver to smash the 1:24 barrier with a stunning lap of 1:23.919. It came despite a wild ride through the final sector of the 5.303-km lap when he had to wrestle the Red Bull RB6 to the finish line.

“The first lap was spot-on everywhere until I reached the final three corners!” grinned Vettel, who also started the season-opening race in Bahrain from pole two weeks ago.

“I think the result speaks for itself, so now we are looking forward to tomorrow. It’s good to start from the front row ? we don’t know messy it will get!”

“Not really happy,” was Webber’s reaction after just failing to secure the second pole position of his own career.

“I would like to be on pole but second is not a bad result. The lap was pretty decent, but there are always places where you could get a little more out of it.”

The Queanbeyan driver looked to have done just that on his second and final run with fastest times through the first and third sectors, but a relatively slow second sector cost him top spot.

Third-fastest was Ferrari’s Bahrain victor Fernando Alonso as all three of the top drivers dipped under the qualifying record ? and both Red Bulls also bettered the outright lap record of 1:24.125, also set by Schumacher in 2004.

The big surprise was Lewis Hamilton’s failure to make it to Q3 as he finished 11th in the second segment of qualifying.

With three of the ‘Big 4’ teams ? Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes ? having both drivers in the top eight, the interloper was Williams veteran Rubens Barrichello ahead of Renault’s Robert Kubica and the impressive Adrian Sutil in his Force India.
